In 2014, Zenith introduced a watch that was linked to the famous Rolling Stones. The famous iconic red tongue that is on so many t-shirts, posters, albums, is now also on a watch. At the time of introduction, everyone wondered about the connection between the Rolling Stones and Zenith. Obviously, this was something from the magic hat that marketing guru Jean-Claude Biver (head of watches at LVMH) is wearing.
The reason why Zenith connected to The Rolling Stones is not that ‘deep’ as some people might expect. It all comes down to the fact that the Rolling Stones are an iconic rock band like Zenith is an iconic watch manufacture. You have to know that Zenith was among the first to develop and manufacture an automatic chronograph movement. The others were a consortium that created the Chronomatic movement (including Heuer, Dubois Dépraz, Hamilton-Buren, and Breitling) and Seiko with their 6139 movement.
So, this watch is mainly interesting for those who love The Rolling Stones or who are in love with the Zenith design so much that they don’t mind the connection.
The Zenith El Primero Chronomaster The Rolling Stones reference 03.2048.4061/77.C496 features one of the direct descendants of the original El Primero movement. In fact, some parts are still interchangeable, which makes it a relatively cheap and fast movement to have serviced or repaired. Just in case it is necessary. This Chronomaster also listens to the name of El Primero Chronomaster 1969, which refers to the year of the first El Primero movement.
Due to the open dial of this Zenith El Primero Chronomaster, you get a peek inside the El Primero movement. Actually, at the heart of this movement, as it unveils the balance wheel and escapement. An interesting moving mechanism to observe. The dial is, except for the tongue, in the same colour scheme as the original El Primero watch (A386) from 1969. With the exception of the sub dial at 9 o’clock, which is part of the ‘open heart’.
This Zenith El Primero Chronomaster The Rolling Stones edition measures 42mm in diameter and has a beautiful case with pump pushers (and no crown guards). The El Primero movement is considered to be a high-beat movement with its 36,000vph and has a column-wheel mechanism for a more precise operation of the chronograph function. The fact that it uses a column-wheel can be felt when pushing the start/stop button.
Zenith’s El Primero Chronomaster The Rolling Stones comes on an alligator strap with deployment clasp.
